Throughout the Interstellar Wars the Terran Confederation appeared to be strangely enamoured with the concept of Carriers and Fighters. The Hiryu and Reppu were their first attempt at producing such a combination. It was the availability of Advanced Nuclear Drive powered missiles in 2098 AD (reverse engineered from Vilani examples) that allowed the production of far smaller combat vessels than had previously been possible. To capitalise on this advance the JSSDF commissioned the construction of four Hiryu class Carriers and 30 Reppu Fighters in 2099 AD. Featuring an armament of AND missiles on a small mass produced hull, the Reppu can in many ways be regarded as the direct antecedent of the highly successful Missile Boats which formed such an important part of the Terran Fleets during the Wars. However the Hiryu and Reppu themselves were not a combat success. Deployed as commerce raiders during the 1st Interstellar War, they proved to be effective only against unarmed targets and were reduced to the reserve even before the end of the War.

It was long believed that all the Hiryus had been broken up before the 2nd War, however in 2547 AD the Hiryu class carrier Taiho was discovered in the planetoid belt of Dismal with her full compliment of five Reppus. Apparently she had been transferred to Dismal as a contingency reserve for the colonial militia and remained forgotten there. When she was rediscovered, she languished for another 48 years before she was moved to the Colonial Forces museum at Prometheus in 2595 AD and featured prominently in the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the first contact between the Terrans and Vilani in 2596 AD.
