Data extracted from Supplement 9: Fighting Ships. The limitation of interstellar communications to the speed of light, or the fastest jump capable ship is a severe strategic and tactical hindrance to those organisations charged with serving or protecting interstellar space. For the Third Imperium the solution was to construct the longest possible long-range jump capable ship, and build them by the thousands to maintain fast and easy communications. With its high tech level it managed to construct several with a range of more than four parsecs.

The Furlong j-6 fleet courier was, and in Regency service still is, a mainstay of naval communications Behind the Claw. Like most couriers, the ship carries an additional computer for message relay, but it is also equipped with defensive armament and countermeasures to protect it against attack. Most older Furlongs now serve with the X-Web, acting as fast data couriers, though usually these have their armament stripped out for more data storage or cargo capacity. An alternative medevac version serves with the Regency Navy, providing fast evacuation of wounded or incapacitated soldiers or civilians from a battlefield or disaster area.
