Notes:

WARNING: These notes are just thoughts I've thrown down on paper... er, bits. I'll slowly work these ideas into the other Belizo pages. Many of these ideas will be simply thrown out after I rethink them. Other ideas will be added which will never make it here. If anything stays the same from this page to the actual Belizo pages I will be very surprised. Proceed at your own risk.

PS: I'm releasing these because I read a very exciting article which makes my Impact idea somewhat plausible. Thus I'm realeasing this land-grab before I originally expected to.

PPS: if that link goes stale I've archived the article here.

PPPS: Generally speaking the lower you go on this page the older the material, and thus the less accurate. For example I still haven't removed my notes about Belizo's moon Beliza which was originally nearly the same size as Belizo. I've since cut Beliza's size in half, to reduce the dramatic effects it would have had on Belizo.

Also, don't bother to check my math. Half of the figures are written here, the other half are on scraps of paper sent to the trash can. I just threw figures down so I wouldn't forget them. There's no method to that madness.

Frequent minor earthquakes in almost all regions.
This is due to continued settling, not because of major techtonic activity.
While there are techtonic plates (12 major ones), and there is some motion, it's minor in comparison to
something like the San Andreas fault. The internal convection activity on Belizo is much smaller than
that of Earth's.
.................................................................................
Need a section (in the society section) on crime. Most crime is in the form of land sale abuse and control. As the
planet approaches a time when the atmospheric taint is gone the price of land will start to skyrocket. When the terra-
forming is complete Belizo will be a fantastic garden world. Sparse population. No mosuqittoes. A thriving culture and
booming technology. Planned yet open growth is strong. The world, once the taint is gone, is perfect. At that time
land on Belizo will become very valuable. Just before this is done the power-brokers are starting to jostle to get into
position. Right now, organized crime (or more accurately organized corruption) is mostly fueled by the contending
power brokers. This includes some mega-corporations, some powerful nobles, and some other groups and individuals. In present day these
numbers are very small, and they are financed not by the results of local crime and corruption (the land isn't truly valuable
yet), but but outside money coming in. Thus outside money is coming in to bribe officials to allow the bribing groups to
own land despite various existing restrictions (laws exist to restrict how much land individuals and organizations can claim - also
some areas are set aside for possible future parks and preserves).

There is also some drug related crime, but this is very small. And there is a very very small amount of anti-environmental
corruption. That is, officials who have been bribed to overlook violations of the various strict environmental control laws.
Instances of this, however, are very very rare. Belizens are fanatical about their environment. Even the bribed officials
need assurances and proof that the violation is not truly dangerous to the planet or to the terra-forming project.

Whether or not a powerful crime organization ever forms on Belizo is up in the air. Certainly in the days of John Stanner
the criminal element is very small. Stanner is/was an example of a bribed official. He was originally in the pocket of a
local power broker. That broker paid off Stanner to allow organizations to own land in quantities and areas which would
have been otherwise prohibited. The organizations getting the land would go through the power broker to access Stanner.

Stanner will also be guilty of one instance (only) of environmental corruption, in the form of allowing a mega-corp to bring
unauthorized life forms to Belizo for study. Stanner only did this, however, after strict assurances that these life forms
would not be able to escape. Stanner actually toured the research facility to ensure that the control measures were adequate.
After Stanners conversion to "good" he will continue to allow the research facility to exist (though he will bar newly imported
life forms). He will also continue to monitor that the safeguards are adequate. This is an example of Stanners conversion.
He's smart enough to know that he can't expose this facility, yet he has tightened down control. This is also an example of
Stanners shrudeness. This mega-corporation is vulnerable to exposure from Stanners knowledge. For sure, if Stanner exposed
them he himself would be damaged, but none the less it is a grip that he has on the mega-corp.

Native native life, and Ancients native life have both been studied to insure that they will be able to survive after
the terra-forming project is done. It has been concluded that almost no life forms on the planet actually use the
excess Sulfur which is present in the atmosphere and soil. Instead, life forms (and the life brought by the Ancients)
have ways of coping with the Sulfur. Thus a decrease, even a significant decrease, of Sulfur will not directly harm
the existing life forms. This continues to be monitored as the terra-forming projects proceeds. Given the extreme
environmentalism of the vast majority of Belizens it's quite possible that the entire terra-forming project could be
put on hold if a species was found to be in trouble due to the terra-forming.

IMTU no species will be in trouble, and the terra-forming project will succeed (spectacularly).

Some of Steltons and BCC's initial fundraising money came from companies and
nobles who bought land with the expectation that some day it would be very
valuable.

When the terra-forming project is complete Belizo will be a Terra-Prime planet.
It will have a greater land area than Earth, it will be filled with life, but
there will be no parasites or pests. By all expectations it will be a garden
world. Once that time is reached land will be very valuable.

Land on Belizo is considered a good investment.

News article: Political reform laws created, pushed, and implemented by John Stanner
in his second term as governor of Topel have proved to be surprisingly effective in
curbing graft, and illegal land deals. Many of these laws are now being copied by
other provices, and by the Belizo federal government.
.................................................................................
Probably 80-90% of all crime on Belizo is commited by off-worlders. The most
common form of corruption is in the form of graft related to land deals. Second
to this is bribery of officials to allow bending of the strict conservation laws.
Sometimes there is physical intimidation to force land sales.

Working toward getting an orbital component to the starport. Then cargos would be
off-loaded and inspected there, and shipped down in special shuttles. These shuttles
would in tern doc a special facilities ensuring no escaped release of organisms.

As it is, however, procedures are excellent. No one is allowed to simply open up
their cargo hatch. Instead either the entire ship is brought into a sealed hanger,
where the air is filtered, and the facilities are cleaned after. For standard ships
the starport has specialized connection ways just like at a normal airport, but these
are hermetically sealed, and the air is sent through a filtration system. Same for
standard cargo hatches. Very large connection ways seal completely, and a negative
air pressure is created leading to the filter systems.

In this regard Belizens do not down-play the taint. They don't lie, but if someone thinks
they'll die if they open their hatch to air, well, the Belizens just might not inform them
otherwise until they're sure this individual will be cautious about atmospheres.

NOTE: the super high precautions are for the ramp-up phase of the terra-form project only.
While it's expcected that once the excess Sulfur is taken out of the air the procedures
will continue (just as strong), it won't really be necessary. After that point the only
Sulfur that will needed to be dealt with is what new sulfur is released from current, active
volcanos. At that maintenance level the biosphere won't be as fragile. Right now, however,
so close the completion of the terra-forming (but not quite there) everyone is real cautious.

atmospheric terra-forming is going exponentially. First there were small introductions,
but the life form is programmed to propigate rather than simply purify air. This exponential
life growth will culminate in 100 to 200 years at which time the sulfur will be removed
about a million times more quickly than when the project was introduced. Then the eventual
exhaustion of atmospheric sulfur will starve off the Bacteria. After that, maintenance amounts
of bacteria will be introduced to keep the air breathable until the volcanism dies down.

The species introduced by the Ancients form their own small biosphere. The plants
grow, the bugs eat the plants, and the rats eat both the bugs and the plants. Since
the rat seems to be self-regulating the whole system stays in balance.

Early Belizens realized this, and protected it. They remain very cautious about introducing
species, and almost all of their introductions are in very controlled settings. Since the
beginning of the colony there has not been a single incident of a non-native plant or animal
getting out of control or away from the settlers. In this regard it's been a conservation
success.

I'm going by CT rules, so the trade route maps showing Belizo as a hub would not be valid.
However, this can be fixed with the following:

Belizo is rapidly changing still. Planetolegists think that the sulpher compounds will
begin to die down as vulcanism dies down. This is expected to be a gradual linear drop over several
thousand years. However terra forming is already underway. For the last 100 years artificially
altered bacteria has been introduced to consume the sulpher compounds. The air is already significantly
cleaner than when the project began. "I remember back in my day we had the change our filters every 10
minutes, you youngin' don't know how it is, needing to change only every day or even week".

It's expected that Belizo's atmosphere will no longer be considered tainted within another one to two
hundred years. This is causing a boom in population and wealth on Belizo. By the end of the century
Belizo is expected to be a major playor in the Rhylanor subsector. Also if Jump2 drives continue
to drop in cost and size Belizo will come more into the reach of mainstream trade routes.

But Belizo is a little larger so mass a little larger: .6426 * 1.027^3 = .696 Earth mass
Belizo mass is .696 * Earth mass ( 5.97e24 ) = 4.16e24

Surface gravity of a body is as follows:

G * mass[kg] / radius[m]^2

where G is the gravitational constant (6.672*10^-11), mass is the
combined mass of both bodies (for all practical purposes, anything of
man-made scale is effectively zero), and radius is the distance from the
two centres of gravities (effectively the planetary surface for most
normal uses).

Using units relative to Terra, that is

gravity = diameter^3 * density / diameter^2

where Terra has values of 1 for gravity, diameter and density. This can
be rationalised further:

surface gravity = diameter * density

For spacecraft at an arbitrary altitude, local gravity is:

local gravity = radius^3 * density / (altitude + radius)^2

or

local gravity = surface gravity * (radius / (altitude + radius))^2

where density and gravity are relative to Terra, and altitude and radius
are in km. Altitude is distance above the planetary surface. A
spacecraft orbiting at 36000 km over Terra (geostationary) will
experience Terra's gravity at 0.224 m/s2, unless it generates its own
gravity somehow. At altitudes below 50 km for Earth-sized bodies, this
has no significant effect (well, 1.5%).

Good enough - use sulphur compounds and/or particulates for your taint. You
don't need much of either of these to render the atmosphere uncomfortable,
or unbreathable.

* Sulphur Oxides
These are strong irritant gases, forming sulphurous and sulphuric acid on
combination with water.

Only 30% of 0.5 micrometre particles remain in the lung during normalresting
breathing (the rest are exhaled).

Clearance of retained particles is via two mechanisms : uptake by tissue
macrophages and the 'mucociliary elevator' - an adult human produces about
40-50cc of mucus a day from the respiratory tree ; usually this is
swallowed.
Inhalation of particulates can have a range of effects, e.g. :-- cough,
wheeze, shortness of breath, bronchospasm (asthma) ;- pneumonia,
pneumonitis, fibrosis (scarring) of the lung from chronic irritation and
inflammation ; some rare cancers.

Don't use significant amounts of CO2, unless there's enough volcanic
activity that you need it for the greenhouse effect.

The SMC is definitely CT, by GDW. It is in their larger format, like
the Traveller Adventure, but a lot thinner. It detailed the events of
the FFW in the SM, also in Rhylanor.

Yes.

Sure -- it likely means that the planet is mostly rocky, and doesn't
have a large metallic core. A density of 0.66 Earth's is between that
of Luna and Mars. Lower than I would expect, but not outside the
bounds of reason. It should be able to hold an atmosphere, though it
might lose more water than Earth.

Yep.

Average surface temperature. It will likely be much colder near the
poles and warmer near the equator, unless the planet has unusual
orbital dynamics (e.g. very high inclination). Think of it as a
typical temperature for a spring evening in mid latitudes.

Pretty much the same, within a few C.

Venus, about 400 C hotter. Mars, about 70 C colder.

Of the planet, in thousands of kilometres.

My Notes:

Both belts mineral poor (so no belters)
(not using do to forevens data) One belt near sun, and burning up causing beautiful colored ring around star
no ancient artifacts

taint is sulpher compounds in air.
CO2 levels higher than normal, and causing mild greenhouse effect.

10,000,000 acres ~ 15,625 mi^2 ~ 3.75 Billion trees (@ 1 tree per ten foot grid)
That's a lot of trees (to make packets for - not really a lot of trees, Washington state is 70,000 sq mi.
